Yesterday You Needed a Department. Today You Need an App.
Imagine running a small business thirty years ago.
You want to advertise a new product.
First, someone has to write the copy. Someone else designs the advertisement. You might need a photographer to take the picture. Then there is printing, distribution and perhaps an advertising agency to bring everything together.
Even a fairly simple campaign could involve half a dozen people.
Today, a bakery owner can photograph a new cake on a phone, improve the picture, write an advertisement, design a poster and publish it to thousands of local customers before the cake has cooled.
That sounds ordinary today.
Which is exactly why it is remarkable.
The same thing happened elsewhere.
A business once needed a bookkeeper to maintain ledgers and prepare accounts. Today, software handles much of the routine work while the owner enters a few numbers.
Booking a complicated journey meant calling a travel agent who had access to information you didn't. Today, you can compare flights, hotels, maps and reviews while sitting on your sofa.
Even something as simple as making a presentation once depended on people who knew how to prepare charts, illustrations and slides. Now a single person can research the subject, write the content, create the graphics and present the finished work from the same laptop.
There is a pattern here.
For a long time, getting more things done usually meant having more people.
Companies created departments because capabilities lived inside people.

Need advertising? Build a marketing department.

Need to understand your finances? Hire accountants.

Need software? Find programmers.

Need research? Give it to a research team.
Large companies had an obvious advantage. They could afford to collect specialists under one roof.
Small businesses couldn't.
Technology has been quietly changing that equation.
It takes things that once required specialist knowledge, expensive equipment or access to information and packages some of that capability into something an ordinary person can use.
The camera is a wonderful example.
Photography didn't become useful because we suddenly invented photographs. Professional photographers had been producing beautiful images for generations.
What changed was access.
Cameras became cheaper. Then digital cameras removed film and processing. Then cameras moved into phones. Editing tools followed them.
Suddenly, the question changed from Who can take a photograph? to Who can take a good photograph?
That distinction matters.
Technology gives us capability. It doesn't automatically give us judgment.
Owning accounting software doesn't make you an accountant. Having a camera doesn't make you a photographer. A design app doesn't give you taste. And an AI writing tool doesn't guarantee that anyone will want to read what you produce.
Expertise still matters.
But the entrance fee has changed.
And AI is pushing it down even further.
Traditional software often required you to learn the tool before you could use its power. You learned menus, commands, formulas and procedures.
Increasingly, you can simply describe what you want.

Build a simple website.
The interesting part isn't that a computer can do these things.
It is who can now ask it to.
A small business with three employees does not suddenly become a company with thirty. But in certain areas, it can begin to operate with capabilities that once belonged mainly to much larger organisations.
That changes what it means to be small.
For most of business history, expanding what a company could do usually meant expanding the company itself. More capability required more specialists, more equipment, more offices and more money.
Now, sometimes, it requires opening another app.
So perhaps the next time you find yourself saying, โWe are too small to do that,โ it is worth asking a different question.
Are we really too small, or are we remembering what it used to take?
